What is the Average Wedding Planner Salary?

The wedding planning business can be a very lucrative one. Many brides decide to hire help when planning their special day. This can be in the form of a wedding planner and/or consultant. If you enjoy weddings, are organized, can stay calm in stressful situations, can communicate well with others and have a creative eye, then you might make a great wedding planner. As a wedding planner it is your job to handle every aspect of the wedding and be the middleman between your client and other professionals such as the caterer, DJ, florist and photographer, for example. A wedding planner salary can range from low to high depending on many factors.

As with every business, setting up a wedding planning business requires startup capital and the proper licenses. The Small Business Administration has a lot of information on obtaining the funds you need to start your business and various resources that can help you plan and launch your business. As mentioned before, your salary as wedding planner can range dramatically. Your geographic location, the number of clients you have, how much you charge your clients, how much competition you have and what your expenses are will all have an effect on your salary.

It has been reported that the median salary for the average wedding planner and/or consultant is approximately $51,000. Obviously, your salary may vary, depending on the size and cost of the weddings you are planning. For example, your commission might be $1000 for one wedding and $10,000 for the next. It all depends on your pricing scale and how much the client's wedding is. Many planners charge a percentage of wedding costs. Ten to twenty percent is a reasonable commission for the average planner.

A wedding planner's salary can certainly be worth the time and effort that is spent building and running your business. Being self employed is rewarding and often profitable. Your business may start off small, then grow as the years go by. If you have children, your business might be something you give to them when you are ready to retire. There are lots of benefits, both personal and financial, to business ownership. Weddings are a booming business that show no sign of changing. For a good wedding planner who provides reasonably priced, top-quality services, the sky really is the limit!
